Philodendron rubrijuvenile, better known by its old trade name 'El Chocó Red' is a newly described Philodendron species from the section Achyropodium, dating to 2022. This section also includes, for example, Philodendron verrucosum and Philodendron squamicaule. Representatives of this section are characterized by velvety leaves and "hairy" or "warty" petioles. This also applies to P. rubrijuvenile. The leaves are very reminiscent of P. verrucosum and are velvety and dark with lighter veins. However, the petioles are not as strongly textured as with P. verrucosum. They only have a slightly rough surface.
The most striking feature, after which P. rubrijuvenile is also named, are the bright red (rubri) backs of young (juvenile) leaves. As the leaves age, the red color fades somewhat, but they always remain brightly colored. A truly beautiful contrast to the matte green front. As the leaves grow larger, they lose this attractive red coloration. Leaves on completely mature plants have rather dull surfaces on both sides, are somewhat thickened in texture and grayish-green in color. However, fresh cataphylls always retain the vibrant red of the young leaves.
Another unusual aspect of P. rubrijuvenile is its growth habit. It is a more creeping Philodendron species. Therefore, the species does not require a moss pole or similar support in the long term. It reaches its maximum leaf size of approx. 60cm as a prostrate vine. Most leaves even remain somewhat smaller, not exceeding approx. 30 - 40cm.
Although the name 'El Chocó Red' suggests an origin from northern Colombia (Departamento del Chocó), there is good evidence that the species comes from the Departamento de Cundinamarca, further southeast in the country, and is therefore quite distant from other representatives of the section Achyropodium.
You will receive a vigorous young plant in a 12cm pot.
